L2P assists 16 to 21 year-old learner drivers who do not have access to a supervising driver or vehicle to gain the mandatory 120 hours of driver experience required to obtain their probationary licence.
The learners who participate in the program are provided with professional driving lessons, and at different stages of the program are matched to volunteer mentors who support them to achieve their 120 required hours of practice. In 2017 the L2P program had over 30 active learners and 26 volunteer mentors who gave over 1,200 hours of their time.
Over the past five years we have purchased a vehicle and provided $5,000 funding each year ($25,000 so far) to help with maintenance and running costs.
Our investment is continuing to provide opportunities for youth, and the long-term benefits of the program also include:
- Increased access to education, employment and training opportunities.
- Increased access to community based activities, which results in a decrease in mental health issues and increases in participants’ contribution to their community.
As the L2P Drivers Education Program celebrates its 10th anniversary in 2018, a recent VicRoads commissioned independent report has found that drivers who have been through the L2P program are 20% less likely to have a serious crash in the first two years of gaining their probationary licence. The program could not survive without the additional funding provided by sponsors, and the Bass Coast Community Foundation is proud to be one of the major sponsors.
